We are a nation of coffee lovers. A recent survey revealed millennials spend on average £728 a year on takeaway coffees, while Gen Z rack ups an annual bill of £678 at their local coffee joint. The research, which was commissioned by McDonald’s, also found the average coffee drinker will spend more than £29,000 on takeaway coffees in a lifetime.
Despite the ever-increasing prices (the average grab-and-go cup is now £3.40), over half admitted coffee is a luxury they wouldn’t want to live without. A third of those who have instant coffee at their workplace also said they would rather splash the cash on a ‘nice’ one. But what if we told you there is a way to get a free, ‘nice’ cup of coffee?
Supermarket chain Waitrose has teamed up with Caffè Nero to offer all its myWaitrose members one free hot drink per day – this includes americanos, lattes and cappuccinos, as well as tea. There are, of course, some reasonable conditions.
You can only redeem the offer in Waitrose stores with self-serve machines and you’ll need to bring a reusable cup. You’ll also have to make a purchase (we’d suggest a banana to go with your morning brew; single-use carrier bags don’t count) and scan your myWaitrose card at checkout to activate the offer.
Once you’ve paid at the till, locate the self-service machine, place your cup underneath the coffee dispenser, scan your loyalty card and select your drink. To add milk, scan your card again.
While Waitrose looks to be the only supermarket offering free hot drinks to its members, Morrisons Café does offer its customers unlimited free refills on hot drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, fruit teas and hot chocolates. Or, if you haven’t already done so, download the Greggs and Gail’s rewards apps to get a coffee on the house.
