Ariana Grande had a pretty brutal response for a British radio host who tried to ask her about using dating apps several years ago.
In a resurfaced clip from a March 2016 interview, Ariana – who has recently been tipped for an Oscar nomination for her role in Wicked – could be seen chatting to Roman Kemp in the Capital FM studio in London when the conversation turned to Tinder.
At one point, Roman, now 31, apologized to the pop star – also 31 – as he told her: ‘My phone keeps buzzing off all the time,’ as Ariana replied: ‘It’s okay, you can take it, I’ll answer.’
Roman then told her: ‘Do you know what it is, and I’m not ashamed to say this, it’s Tinder,’ as the Into You hitmaker replied: ‘Stop, oh my God, right now man? It’s like 9am! Dude!’
Laughing at her response, Roman said: ‘Mate, I know. But I’m not very good at it, well I don’t think I’m very good at it. Have you ever used Tinder?’
‘No, I’ve not!’ Ariana fired back, before Roman claimed that fellow singer Meghan Trainor told him about a ‘celebrity Tinder,’ as Ariana replied: ‘I love her, that’s so funny.’
Handing his phone over to her, Roman then invited her: ‘You can have a go on my Tinder if you want,’ as Ariana bluntly told him: ‘I’m not gonna swipe these people,’ but proceeded to pick his phone up and started looking at the dating app.
At one point, Roman asked the brunette: ‘Would you ever swipe right on me?’ but clearly wasn’t expecting Ariana’s response as she told him: ‘I’m uncomfortable with this question.
‘This is putting me on the spot, man. I don’t have Tinder,’ she revealed, before she asked him: ‘Did I hurt your feelings? I’m too shy for this! Are you alright?’
‘Yeah, I’m all good, I’m messing with you,’ Roman laughed before moving the chat swiftly along.
It’s unclear if Ariana was actually single at the time of the interview, but she did go public with her romance with Mac Miller months later in September 2016.
The pair dated for nearly two years before amicably calling it quits in May 2018.
In September that year, rapper Mac, whose real name was Malcolm James McCormick, died of an accidental overdose at the age of 26.
Following his death, Ariana posted an emotional tribute on Instagram which read: ‘I adored you from the day I met you when I was 19 and I always will.
‘I can’t believe you aren’t here anymore. I really can’t wrap my head around it. We talked about this. So many times. I’m so mad, I’m so sad, I don’t know what to do. You were my dearest friend. For so long. Above anything else.
‘I’m so sorry I couldn’t fix or take your pain away. I really wanted to. The kindest, sweetest soul with demons he never deserved. I hope you’re okay now. Rest,’ she added.
Following her split from Mac, Ariana enjoyed a whirlwind romance with comedian Pete Davidson in 2018.
She began dating real estate agent Dalton Gomez in January 2020 and the pair got married in May 2021 at her home in California.
By February 2023, the couple had separated and simultaneously filed for divorce in the September, citing ‘irreconcilable differences,’ and their divorce was finalized in March 2024, by which time Ariana was dating Wicked costar Ethan Slater.
Ethan was married to his high school sweetheart, Lilly Jay, when he joined the production and first met Ariana.
The actor, who welcomed his first child with Jay in 2022, filed for divorce in July 2023 – five years after they tied the knot.
Earlier this month, DailyMail.com revealed how Wicked bosses covered up Ariana and Ethan’s romance over fears that it could have ruined the blockbuster film.
Insiders have claimed the couple were instructed to ‘disappear for six months’ in the hope that the backlash would die down before the long-awaited musical hits cinemas on November 22.
‘When news of the relationship first broke, studio execs were extremely worried about how it would impact the film,’ a source told DailyMail.com.
‘They were feeling the heat and Ariana and Ethan were instructed to disappear for six months, which they did.’
