Aussie Hollywood icon’s rarely-seen son steps out with her at star-studded charity event in New York… but can you guess who his famous mother is?

An esteemed Aussie actress made a rare public appearance with her son at a star-studded event in New York City on Thursday night.

The 55-year-old is regarded as one of the finest performers of her generation with two Academy Awards, four BAFTAs and four Golden Globes to her name.

She was the first ambassador of the Australian Film Institute and has been a patron of the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts since 2001.

She is also a a patron of the Sydney Film festival and was co-CEO and artistic director of the Sydney Theatre company from 2008 to 2013.

In her personal life, she has been married to her playwright husband for 27 years and together they share four children, who are usually kept of of the spotlight.

However, the star made a rare outing with one of her sons in New York this week for a charity event held by the Clooney Foundation for Justice, run by George and Amal Clooney.

They sweetly held hands as they arrived at the New York Public Library together, with her son looking very suave in a black suit.

But can you guess who his famous mother is?  

She also wore a smokey eye, a light rose blush and a matching shade for her lip.

That’s right, it’s none other than acting icon Cate Blanchett.

The Elizabeth star arrived at the glittering event, The Albies, with her eldest son Dashiell on her arm.

Cate cut a chic figure in an effortlessly stylish black sequinned blouse, which finished at her knee and featured silver embellishments on the left shoulder.

She channelled her inner rocker with a pair of black leather pants and matching black heels to complete her look. 

Keeping the accessories to a minimum, Cate wore some finger and ear bling while finishing her ensemble with a black clutch purse with gold embellishments.

She also wore a smokey eye make-up palette, a light rose blush and a matching shade for her lip.

Dashiell cut a dapper figure in a dark blue double breasted suit that he matched with a pair of black leather shoes.

He also wore a white shirt, black tie and light blue charity ribbon for the glitzy event. 

Cate and Dashiell rubbed shoulders with a galaxy of stars at the Albies, including  Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Jimmy Fallon, Donatella Versace, and Jon Stewart.

The Albies were named after anti-apartheid hero Justice Albie Sachs and seek to recognise people who defend justice around the world.

As well as Dashiell, Cate shares two more sons Roman, 19, and Ignatius, 16, and a daughter Edith, eight, with her longtime husband Andrew Upton.

While Cate has carved out a hugely successful career as an actress and soared to global fame, Andrew has also seen big success across theatre and film.

The couple have been married for nearly 30 years, having tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in December 1997 after he proposed after three weeks of dating.
