A home cook has revealed the secret to peeling a lychee – but fans couldn’t help but notice there was something very different about the fruit she used.
The lychee she cracked open for the camera was supersized.
After she successfully peeled it she revealed it was a dragon egg lychee – a larger version of the popular summertime fruit.
She explained most of Australia’s stock of dragon egg lychees get shipped off to Asia where they are in hot demand.
As a result they are very ‘hard to find’ and only pop up in stores every once in a while.
‘I buy them whenever I see them even though they are a little bit expensive,’ she said.
She likened the monster fruit to ‘eating a peach’.
Typical lychees weigh about 20g each, dragon eggs start at about 50g but can weigh up to 100g making them five-times the size of the smaller fruit.
And many of her fans agreed with her positive review of the rare variety.
‘I bought some at Toscano’s last week, they are so good,’ one woman said.
‘I also buy them every time I see them. Good to know they seem to be around,’ said another.
‘No way, I am off to buy some,’ added a third.
‘I would kill to get such a big lychee as that,’ another said.
The home cook said she found hers at her local Harris Farm supermarket.
Others were just shocked.
‘Where in the world? Never have I ever seen lychees that size!.’
The post was hijacked by a group of Americans who had never seen a lychee before.
‘What the hell is that thing?’ one asked.
‘Some kind of Asian fruit apparently,’ said another.
‘I live in Texas I don’t think they’d go down real well around here,’ added a third.
But another chimed in: ‘You should try them they are delicious’.
In the post the home cook explained peeling lychees doesn’t have to be a chore.
If you find the ridge – which she dubbed ‘the bum crack’ and squeeze the outer shell should break open revealing the soft, white fruit and sticky juice.
