In his final hours in office, President Joe Biden has issued preemptive pardons for Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired General Mark Milley and for members of the Democrat-led January 6 committee.
Condemnation of the decision swiftly followed Monday’s action.
Senator Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) took to X, saying “the guy who claimed he would ‘protect norms’ continues to bulldoze them and the constitution until the bitter end.”
Lawmakers have been calling for Fauci’s role in gain-of-function research and for his handling of the pandemic to be investigated since 2020, while members of the January 6 select committee have been accused of witness and evidence tampering.
Milley released a statement saying that he and his family are deeply thankful to Biden.
“My family and I are deeply grateful for the President’s action today,” he wrote. “After forty-three years of faithful service in uniform to our Nation, protecting and defending the Constitution, I do not wish to spend whatever remaining time the Lord grants me fighting those who unjustly might seek retribution for perceived slights.”
“I do not want to put my family, my friends, and those with whom I served through the resulting distraction, expense, and anxiety,” he added.
Biden says he is protecting these people from the Trump administration’s “revenge.”
