Blue City Mayors Playing Games With Trump Over Illegal Immigrant Deportations, Could End Badly for Them

On November 5, the American people charged President Donald Trump with three main tasks: fixing the economy, closing the southern border, and deporting illegal immigrants. He is quickly delivering on closing the border, and the mass deportation of illegal immigrants has begun in full force. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has already started arresting the most hardened criminals and gang members first. You would think that most people might be all for ridding the country of dangerous people — but not the mayors of several Democrat-run cities. They are vowing not to cooperate with ICE and other law enforcement in deportation efforts.

It is no surprise that the usual suspects, mayors like Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, are announcing they have instructed local law enforcement not to cooperate with ICE and are putting out information designed to help illegal immigrants in their communities evade apprehension. On Tuesday, Frey, with squad member Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) standing by his side, had this to say.

“I want to speak directly to people who are undocumented. We love you. We care about you. In the city of Minneapolis, we will stand up for you. and we will do anything in our power to help. Because you’re not an alien in our city, you’re a neighbor.”

Frey then went on to explain that the city has something called a “separation ordinance.” It states that city officials, including police officers, will not “gather information on who is and who is not documented.” He added that local law enforcement does not ask about immigration status and, therefore, does not have any data. Frey concluded his statement with this:

Our police officers will not be cooperating with federal law enforcement around federal immigration law. We enforce state and local laws here in Minneapolis, and we will do so to the best of our ability. But as for cooperation with ICE, the answer is no.

In Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson has also vowed not to cooperate with ICE. In a statement on X, Johnson said not only would the city not cooperate with ICE, but he pointed to resources designed to help illegal immigrants avoid federal authorities saying:

“The Welcoming City Ordinance is a law, & it is a law of the land here in Chicago. We will uphold it, along with the complementary Illinois Trust Act, to ensure that our immigrant communities are safe. Furthermore, we intend to continue to empower all of our communities throughout our city with crucial information and resources at this time. On the city’s website, http://Chicago.Gov, we offer a ‘Know Your Rights’ resource guide, providing all information, tools, and contacts that our immigrant communities should know.”

Johnson may also have some help from the state. Immediately following Trump’s victory, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker defiantly stated, “You come for my people, you come through me.” However, he has since softened his stance a bit, saying he is willing to cooperate with ICE to “get rid of” illegal immigrant criminals.

But Trump administration officials have made it clear that if blue city mayors and others want to engage in a giant game of “chicken,” they will lose. They could even run the risk of being arrested and face prosecution themselves for harboring illegal immigrants. It is a step Trump Border Czar Tom Homan is more than willing to take to get illegal immigrant criminals out of the country. Democrat city and state officials will do a ton of bloviating, but it will take Homan arresting just one of them before the rest will undoubtedly cave faster than a Columbian president and see their way clear to cooperating with ICE.

Being the “resistance” is edgy and cool until there are consequences.
