Brisbane Broncos stars Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam investigated by NRL over alleged incident at Bali nightclub

  • Became involved in alleged incident with fan seeking a selfie
  • Allegations are being investigated by NRL Integrity Unit

Two high profile NRL players are being investigated over an alleged altercation with fans while in Bali for their end-of-season holiday.

Just one day after the Brisbane Broncos sacked coach Kevin Walters, the NRL club faces another unwanted distraction after missing out on the 2024 finals.

Broncos 2023 grand final superstars Reece Walsh and Ezra Mama are being investigated by the NRL integrity unit after the alleged incident that took place late at night in Bali.

A fan has officially lodged complaints with the NRL and the Brisbane Broncos over the alleged behaviour of the players after they asked for a selfie.

It is alleged that Walsh was posing for the photo when Mam intervened. The phone involved has since gone missing.

News Corp has reported that the complaint was centred around the mobile device being broken and that the players later paid for a replacement phone.

Walsh has reportedly agreed to a lucrative $5million contract on a four-year extension, but has not yet signed the deal to remain at Red Hill long term.

The two Broncos players posted images on Instagram two days prior, with Walsh raising a glass of red wine and captioning the image: ‘Just a little quiet time’.

The players were also snapped together at an NBA match in the United States ahead of the 2024 season-opener in Las Vegas.

It comes just one day after Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater stepped up to Walsh.

‘He is not perfect and sometimes we expect our young stars to be perfect too early,’ Slater said on his Channel 9 podcast.

‘But he is only 22 and you have to take yourself back to 22 and say, ‘How many rough edges did I have?’

‘He will develop and grow as a person and player.

‘We should be thankful that guys like Reece want to be a part of our game because they bring everything to our game.

It also comes after Walsh was arrested for cocaine possession on September 26, 2021, in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast.

Walsh is already a Queensland State of Origin player and was backed by Maroons coach Billy Slater the day before the alleged Bali incident

Following the arrest, he was charged with possessing a prohibited substance and faced court proceedings.

The NRL imposed a two-match suspension and fined him $5000 as part of his punishment. Additionally, Walsh was required to undergo drug and alcohol counseling and complete community service.

The revelations of the alleged incident involving Walsh and Mam became public at the same time Walters was farewelling the Broncos faithful in his final media conference for the club.

‘So my time here has been very joyful I’ve got to say. A lot of my time here has been good times. Also, like everyone has their dry moments and their moments where you learn and you get better,’ Walters said.

Kevin Walters said goodbye to the Broncos fans at his final media conference as the alleged incident involving Walsh and Mam became public

‘That’s certainly been the case for me in the last four years. I am really proud of the fact that when I arrived here, as Dave said, the club wasn’t in great shape. I feel that myself along with a lot of other good staff and people here have shaped the club into today.

‘And this year, obviously a tough year for everyone, including fans and sponsors and members. So with the club, it’s a great club and I’m sure that they’ll be back challenging again before too long.

‘So I want to thank all the staff and that I’ve worked with over the last four years. People on level one, which is where the football staff are and also people upstairs on level two. They’re really good to work with.

‘But as I say, unfortunately my time here now has finished from the head coaching point of view. Also I want to thank my family. They’ve been really terrific to me.

‘And I just want to thank them and thank everyone else who’s been a part of the journey here. Not so much the last four years, but all my time here at the Broncos. There have been people that have helped me become the person that I am. So, thank you.’
