Brooke Shields shared a hilarious story in which she thought that she may have accidentally ‘flooded’ the home of former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, former first lady Barbara Bush.
At an event in New York hosted by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Shields, 59, recalled a trip she made with her family to see the Bushs’ at their home in Kennebunkport, Maine.
After having fun during the day, everybody retired to bed except for Shields, who noticed that water was leaking into the house from the windows due to a rainstorm.
‘I feverishly start closing all the windows, and I go and get towels and wrap up the whole thing,’ she said, according to People magazine.
‘And now it’s a mess. And I’m thinking, “Whoa, I got a beer in my hand and I’m flooding the house. None of this looks good”.’
The Blue Lagoon star desperately placed towels down on the ground in an attempt to protect the home’s natural wood finishes, which she feared would be warped by the water.
She then went up to the Bushs’ bedroom to inform them of what had happened.
‘I’m not making eye contact because everyone’s in sleep clothes,’ she said.
‘And I’m like, “The windows were open and there was floods and I’m worried about the wood warping. So I cleaned it up and I just wanted to give you a heads up that that’s what’s happening. And I hope you have a really nice night. Thank you for having me”,’ she nervously recounted.
While Shields assumed she’d be in trouble with the political powerhouses, she said that the opposite actually happened.
After informing the pair what happened, Barbara turned to George and said, ‘Oh honey, Brooke saved the house from flooding’.
Barbara passed away in 2018 at age 92, while H.W. Bush died the same year at 94.
Shields is currently preparing to release her memoir, titled Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed to Get Old.
Ahead of its 2025 release, the star revealed the cover on Instagram in early August.
She wrote in a caption to her 2.2 million followers, ‘I am beyond ecstatic to share that my brand new book will be out on January 14th!
‘I hope that this book can help start a conversation about how midlife can be the prime of life… full of possibilities and excitement.’
The mother-of-two continued, ‘It’s honest and it’s hilarious and you can pre-order your copy RIGHT NOW!’
