Christmas party season is almost here – and I’ll let you in on a fashionable secret: this season you can find a truly showstopping outfit in the supermarket.
The big stores are offering clever, surprisingly good quality lookalikes of high-street party staples, at incredibly affordable prices.
From luxe faux fur to stylish suits, here we showcase head-turning supermarket outfits – alongside their more expensive doppelgangers. So, can you spot the difference?
LOOK AT ME SUIT
With all the wow factor of a dress, but plenty of cool factor too, there’s nothing better than a classic red suit for a Christmas party. Sainsbury’s suit (below) has a flattering silhouette.
LUXE VELVET
High street velvet can sometimes look shiny and cheap. Not at Sainsbury’s – this navy velvet suit (below) is more Tom Ford than Tu. Silver accessories amp up the ice queen aesthetic.
SILKY SLIP
No wonder our model Esme is smiling – she’s wearing a black-tie appropriate dress that’s £22.50 in Tu’s Black Friday sale (below). Its fabric (heavy, beautifully draped) feels just as good as it looks on camera. For parties, a black jacket over the shoulders works for those not keen on exposed arms.
FUR AND GLITZ
Some frivolous trousers are the perfect way to inject some Christmas pizz-azz into the jumpers you’ve been wearing on repeat all winter. Protect ankles by wearing sheer spotty tights underneath and add a faux fur coat for extra luxe factor. Morrisons’ £49 coat (below) could be Saint Laurent’s £10,600 version.
THE TROPHY SKIRT
Morrisons’ lamé skirt (below) will be the most useful weapon in your party arsenal. By evening, pair it with a cherry red knit and party flats; by day, contrast its extravagance with chunky boots.
