The Carolina Panthers have chosen who will start between former top overall pick Bryce Young and a now-healthy Andy Dalton for their game on Sunday against divisional rivals New Orleans.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales said Wednesday the team will go with Young for the NFC South matchup.
Canales was not ready to name Young as the team’s starter for the rest of the season however.
It will be the second consecutive start for Young and the fourth overall this season after the former Heisman Trophy winner ran Carolina’s offense for the first two weeks of the year.
After the Panthers season-opening pair of losses, Young was benched for the 37-year-old Dalton, who immediately led the team to its only win of the season over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Dalton then started the team’s next three games, all losses, before a thumb injury suffered in a car accident gave Young another chance. Dalton is available as a backup for the game against the Saints.
Young did not gain his first win of the season as a starter on Sunday against the Broncos.
The Panthers are on track to have the No 1 pick in the NFL Draft for the second time in three years and have the league’s worst record for the second consecutive season.
Carolina did not select first in the NFL Draft this year by trading that pick to the Bears to get to the top slot last year and take Young.
The Bears took Caleb Williams with this year’s No 1 overall pick, who has looked impressive for the Bears so far this season.
