A cleaning expert has revealed how often you should wash your towels and pillowcases – and it is far more often than you might think.
According to Shannon Lush, towels need to be washed every second time you use them unless they are able to ‘completely dry’ between showers.
This news shocked thousands of Aussies who admitted to using towels ‘for a week or so’ typically… before the guru dropped another bombshell on pillow cases.
She explained pillow cases need to be washed every second day at minimum.
There is two days grace, she explained, because you can flip the pillow for the second night.
If you happen to use both sides of the pillow in a single night then going by her standards they should be changed daily.
She continued to explain how often you should wash sheets, saying it ‘depends on the person’ and their hygiene habits.
‘If they shower before bed then they will have to wash their sheets less often,’ she explained in a video, which has since gone viral.
But many were quick to dismiss the homemaker.
‘This might be recommended but not actually what she practices,’ one man said.
Another complained she must have a huge carbon footprint.
‘Or what happens if I don’t wash the pillow case every two days? I’ll get sick? I’ll die?’ asked another.
‘No. You might have that kind of time on your hands if you don’t work but the rest of us do,’ a third said.
Some agreed with her.
‘With drool, sweat and oil from your face going on your pillow at night. When you put your clean face back on that every night you’ll notice your skin breaking out.. I always turn my pillow and change my pillowcase every two days for this reason and my skin is so much clearer,’ one woman said.
‘I never use my towel more than twice, it is full of bacteria,’ said another.
She also shared her special laundry mix which features vinegar, bi-carb soda and less detergent than recommended on the side of the pack.
But people were quick to point out the flaws in her argument.
‘Basic science, bicarbonate soda and vinegar cancel each other out. Both are brilliant cleaning products used on their own and in different ways but combine them and you just made expensive water,’ one woman said.
‘Vinegar in the washing machine destroys your seals,’ another added.
Though others continued to stand up for the cleaning lady.
‘She uses them separately, one in pre wash and one in rinse and it does work,’ one woman said.
‘I have been using vinegar in my washing machine for a decade and no leaks yet,’ said another.
And some just dropped comments highlighting their own schedules.
‘Towels twice a week. Sheets once a week to once a fortnight,’ one woman said.
‘Towels, when they start to stink or are visibly dirty. Sheets, whenever the wife can be bothered to do it. Simple,’ one man added.
