Cristiano Ronaldo has sent a heartfelt message to new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim as the club legend gave his verdict on the new Old Trafford chief.

Amorim began work as United’s new boss at the start of the week and delivered his first interview with the club on Friday since joining from Sporting Lisbon.

The 39-year-old shares more than just one thing in common with Ronaldo and the legendary goalscorer appears delighted to see one of his native coaches being given a chance at one of the world’s biggest clubs.

The pair are the same age, both left Sporting Lisbon to move to Manchester with Ronaldo joining as a talented 18-year-old after being spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson and each played alongside each other in the Portuguese national team.

Ronaldo is continuing his superstar playing career at Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, while Amorim retired from playing in 2017 in favour of becoming a head coach and has thrived in the managerial environment.

He replaces Erik ten Hag – who Ronaldo famously fell out with prior to leaving United for the second time in his career – and Amorim’s immediate task is sorting through the chaos left by his predecessor.

Now, Ronaldo has given Amorim’s arrival his rubber stamp of approval as his fellow countryman gets to work in his new surroundings backed by United’s INEOS sporting team of executives.

Speaking after scoring a bicycle kick in Portugal’s 5-1 win over Poland on Friday evening, Ronaldo stated: ‘I wish Man United and Ruben Amorim the best of luck in the world’.

Meanwhile, United captain Bruno Fernandes also scored in Portugal’s latest Nations League victory and Amorim will be hoping the playmaker returns to Old Trafford fit ahead of his first match in charge.

Amorim has since revealed the two major reasons behind moving to Manchester after ignoring attempts from other European giants to secure his services.

Hailing those responsible for appointing him as United’s seventh permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013, Amorim told MUTV: ‘First of all, I think I felt a connection with the club. And when I say with the club, everybody knows Manchester United.

‘But I feel the connection with the people in the club and that is very important for me because I want to work with people that I like and I feel a connection.

He added: ‘The second point is the history of this club. And also the moment I think all the people are hungry for success and I feel that this is the place that I want to be also because of that, because you can be part of something special, not just one more. And that is something that I really like.’
