Danny Welbeck taken off on a stretcher after horror injury in the final minutes of Brighton’s clash with Newcastle – with defender given oxygen before leaving the pitch

Danny Welbeck had to be stretched off the pitch at St James Park following what appears to be a serious injury.

The Brighton ace fell to the floor in the 77th minute following a coming together with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

The collision between the pair appeared minuscule, however the 33-year-old immediately fell to the floor in agony, with medical staff being called on the pitch immediately.

Welbeck was treated for several minutes on the pitch, where he required oxygen before he was taken away on a stretcher. 

Several reports are saying the Brighton star suffered an injury to his lower back, however the severity of his injury is unknown.

The Seagull's forward required oxygen and was treated by medical staff for several minutes on the pitch following the coming together

The England international received a standing ovation from both sets of fans as he was carried from the pitch and replaced by Jan Paul van Hecke.

Up until the freak injury and his outing St James Park was cut short, Welbeck was having a brilliant game.

He the game opener in the 35th minute, after he chested down Lewis Dunk’s long free-kick, forcing a one-two with Georginio Rutter, before he managed to slot the ball in the back of the net with pressure from Tino Livramento.

Welbeck’s cool finish proved to be the match winner in what proved to be a frustrating afternoon for Eddie Howe’s men who suffered their first loss at home since January.

The former Arsenal forward has enjoyed a stellar start to the new campaign, finding the back of the net an impressive five times in eight games for Fabian Hurzeler’s men.

His goal today also sees him reach 100 goal contributions in the Premier League, registering 72 goals and 28 assists in England’s top-flight.
