Fans fume that World Series umpire is ‘not qualified’ after huge errors during Yankees-Dodgers Game 1

MLB fans were left furious at the performance of Carlos Torres after the umpire missed 14 calls during the Dodgers’ dramatic World Series win over the Yankees.

Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam to secure a 6-3 victory for Los Angeles in the 10th inning of Game 1 on Friday night.

It was a historic, electrifying clash at Dodger Stadium but many fans were still left angry at errors by the umpires.

Venezuelan Torres came in for particular criticism, with one social media account collating 14 missed strike calls – including nine against New York

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole failed to hide his frustration after one fastball was ruled a ball – rather than a strike – and many fans shared his annoyance.

‘Can we change umpires mid game? Carlos Torres is not qualified for Game 1 of the World Series,’ one prominent Yankees fan account asked.

‘He isn’t qualified for little league practice,’ another supporter added. ‘An absolute joke that this guy is in a game this big,’ said a third.

Before the game, Torres was quoted as saying it was a ‘dream come true’ to be part of the crew for the World Series.

‘I am so happy that I can’t find the words to describe it. It is a huge honor, a dream come true, which I share with my children, my family, Venezuela, and all my colleagues,’ he told Footboom.

‘It is a great responsibility because the first game can set the tone for the entire series. Being there is the culmination of everything I have worked for and strived for in my career.’

The Dodgers and Yankees meet again in Game 2 in Los Angeles on Saturday night.
