Federal Employees Told They Have Until End of the Day to Remove Pronouns From Their Email Signatures

Federal employees with at least two departments have received orders to remove pronouns from their signature blocks by 5 p.m. Friday. It is another indication that the Trump administration is very serious about eliminating placative DEI policies from the government.

Internal memos obtained by ABC News at both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) indicate employees are to remove the pronouns from their email signatures.

“Pronouns and any other information not permitted in the policy must be removed from CDC/ATSDR employee signatures by 5 p.m. ET on Friday,” a memo delivered by CDC Chief Information Officer Jason Bonander.

“Staff are being asked to alter signature blocks by 5 p.m. ET today (Friday, January 31, 2025) to follow the revised policy.”

The directive removing pronouns from employee email signatures cites an executive order signed by President Trump titled, “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.”

The order points to actual science in declaring there are only two sexes recognized by the federal government.

“It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female,” it reads. “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”

President Trump confirmed he would make a pivot towards the actual science in his inaugural speech. He vowed to “end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender into every aspect of public and private life.”

“We will forge a society that is colorblind and merit-based,” the president continued. “As of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders, male and female.”

The move to remove pronouns from email signatures is a significant pivot away from the Biden administration, which allowed, if not glorified, the practice.

Toward the end of Joe Biden’s first year in office, the Air Force announced that they would authorize gender pronouns in signature blocks for department communications.

Chief Information Officer Lauren Barrett Knausenberger sent a memo announcing the move.

“This guidance provides approval for the use of pronouns in electronic signature blocks and expands on written communication by providing official templates posted on e-publishing website available for download,” a letter accompanying the memo states.

“The use of pronouns (he/him, she/her, or they/them) in an email signature block is authorized but not required,” the document reads.

At the time of this publication, it is unclear if other departments had received similar directives to remove pronouns from their signature blocks. It seems likely they’d receive similar instructions.
