Gary Lineker weighed in on Man United and Tottenham‘s woeful campaigns this season, as both teams languish in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Spurs are in 15th place, eight points off the relegation zone, while United are just two spots above them, having only won three of their 11 league games under Ruben Amorim.
Ange Postecoglou‘s side have tasted victory just once in their last 10 league outings. Both teams have all but waved goodbye to any hopes of competing in Europe next season through domestic success.
Unless either of them can pull off a miracle and bring home the Europa League trophy, their players will likely be spending weekday evenings in 2025-26 in the comfort of their homes.
Lineker provided his verdict on which of these two struggling sides are worse off, arguing that Spurs’ squad is better than United’s and that they are in a more promising place under Postecoglou.
‘I think if you had everyone fit then Tottenham are in a better place than Manchester United,’ he said on The Rest is Football podcast.
‘I think if I look at the overall squad then they’ve probably got a little bit more than United.
‘United need to do more in the transfer market. Obviously both of them are in a bit of a rut at the present.’
Alan Shearer chimed in and said: ‘I wouldn’t disagree with that. If they ever get their players back to fitness, they’re slightly better than Manchester United’s first XI.’
After United’s embarrassing 3-1 defeat by Brighton on Sunday, Amorim conceded that his side are possibly the worst in the club’s history.
On the day that United paid tribute to the legendary Denis Law, they were humiliated by the Seagulls. Their record at home this season is the club’s worst in the league in 131 years.
‘We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,’ Amorim admitted.
‘I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and change it. Here you go: your headlines.
‘It’s unacceptable to lose so many games. For any Premier League club, so imagine Manchester United?
‘The opponents are better than us in many details. I am just here to help my players, but we need to understand we are breaking all the bad records.
‘In 10 games in the Premier League, we won two. I know that. Imagine what this is [like] for a United fan. Imagine what this is [like] for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that.’
Meanwhile, affairs in N17 are hardly brighter, as Postecoglou admitted that his team desperately need reinforcements in this month’s transfer window.
Tottenham suffered their 12th loss of the Premier League season on Sunday after a rough 3-2 defeat by Everton on Sunday.
Dominic Solanke will be out for ‘a few weeks’ according to the Spurs boss, Brennan Johnson ‘three to four weeks’ and Radu Dragusin came off at Goodison Park with a head wound. Tottenham’s list of absentees now sits at 11 players – a Premier League high.
‘There will be urgency, but it doesn’t need me to say it,’ said Postecoglou when asked about reinforcements before the end of the month.
‘Everybody can see that. I’ve no issues with how the club are going about it, they are working hard and trying to find solutions.
‘These players need help that is for sure and hopefully over the next 10 days or so we’ll find a solution. It is really tricky, we’re not the only ones in the market. The club are trying hard.’
