GOP Rep. Condemns Over $10M in ‘DEI Grants’ for Universities to Study Transgender Lab Animals

Representative Nancy Mace (R-SC) has been in the news quite a bit lately, in no small part because of her running feud with a certain Texas Democrat (yes, there are some.) While Rep. Mace freely engages this other representative, she also has time to engage in uncovering wasteful spending by the government in her role as a member of the House Oversight and Accountability Committee.

In the committee’s latest find, Mace revealed that millions of taxpayer dollars have gone into the creation of transgender” monkeys, mice, and rats.

The X post reads in full:

Rep. Nancy Mace (@RepNancyMace) Opens Hearing on the Oversight of Taxpayer Funded Animal Cruelty

“Late last year the White Coat Waste Project exposed that more than $10 million dollars in taxpayer funds were spent creating transgender mice, rats, and monkeys.

“These DEI grants funded painful and deadly transgender experiments that forced lab animals to undergo invasive surgeries and hormone therapies at universities across the country.

“For example, the Biden-Harris Administration spent $2.5 million taxpayer dollars to study the fertility of transgender mice.”

There is a place for the use of animals in medical research. Some things, systemic issues, reactions, and so forth, can’t be easily modeled; only a living organism can provide results. But animals should only be used where absolutely necessary, and carrying out these kinds of treatments and surgeries on animals isn’t necessary.

Rep. Mace issued a formal press release on the matter:

Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Information Technology, and Government Innovation Chairwoman Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) will hold a hearing titled “Transgender Lab Rats and Poisoned Puppies: Oversight of Taxpayer Funded Animal Cruelty.” The federal government misuses billions of taxpayer dollars on unnecessary animal experiments every year. Non-animal testing alternatives, driven by increasingly sophisticated technological tools, can more accurately model human biology and replace the need for animal experimentation. The Subcommittee plans to evaluate current animal cruelty funded by the federal government and explore opportunities to prioritize technological alternatives that increase relevance to humans.

Granted, not all modeling can be done with “sophisticated technological tools,” as our most sophisticated tools are laughably crude compared to a biological system. It’s the same problem the climate scolds face with their models; they are applying those tools to a vast, chaotic, impossibly complex system. A living organism, with all of the chemical, physical, neurological, and countless other interactions and behaviors, can’t be duplicated precisely, and sometimes that’s what is needed.

That’s not the case here. This research isn’t necessary. It sure as shooting isn’t necessary for the American taxpayers to take yet another soaking to pay for it. It’s an improper and unethical use of laboratory animals, it’s a waste of the money of hard-working Americans, and should be defunded.
