Shocking CCTV footage has captured the moment two boys were thrown metres from their bike after they were hit by a 4WD.
The children, aged 8 and 11, had just turned onto Amberton Avenue in Girrawheen, north of Perth, when a black Mitsubishi Pajero hit them at 5.15pm on Wednesday.
Both were rushed to Perth Children’s Hospital in a serious condition.
The eight-year-old sustained critical injuries and is in a serious but stable condition.
The 11-year-old arrived to hospital with serious injuries and is also stable.
Both children were riding on the same bike and it remains unclear whether both were wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
Neighbours reported hearing a loud bang and those who rushed out onto the street found the boys seriously injured on the road.
The 39-year-old male driver of the 4WD was uninjured and is now assisting police with their inquiries.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch said it’s important that drivers pay attention to what is happening on the roads around them.
‘This is about road users paying attention to what’s around them and I don’t think I’m in a position where I’m going to be blaming kids for riding around the streets, this is for a driver to pay attention to what they’re doing,’ he said.
‘At this stage, all I know is that there was an indication of the presence of alcohol, but I don’t know what the speed was but the Major Crash investigation team will determine that.’
Major Crash investigators are examining the scene.
Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
