Let the Hilarity Begin: MSNBC Just Gave Conservatives a Rachel Maddow-Shaped Inauguration Present

It’s an embarrassment of riches for conservatives these days. Not only have Republicans taken control of both the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, but President-elect Donald Trump is now less than one week away from taking the oath of office for the second time.

And with Trump comes a slate of nominees who, if not always a conservative’s first choice for their chosen position, are sure to induce apoplexy on the Democrat Party on a regular basis. It’s just punishment for the left and will surely be fun to watch.

But wait, there’s more.

MSNBC announced Monday that its overpaid “star host” Rachel Maddow will now actually have to earn her ginormous salary by hosting her show five days a week. Maddow, who reportedly earns $25 million per year for hosting her Monday-only show, is temporarily increasing her output in order to cover the first 100 days of Trump’s second term.

This means that Alex Wagner, who currently hosts the 9 p.m. ET hour on the other four days, is being demoted to hosting a traveling roadshow called “Trumpland: The First 100 Days.”

“This is a consequential next chapter in American politics,” MSNBC president Rashida Jones said in a statement. “The moment we’re in requires us to cover the early days of the new administration from all over the country – from the nation’s capital, where policy is being implemented, to talking to those in key communities and constituencies impacted by those policies. No one is better equipped to bring those stories from the field to MSNBC viewers than our intrepid Alex Wagner.”

This is actually a smart move by MSNBC, whose ratings rise and fall with Donald Trump’s fortunes. MSNBC has to know that it performs its best when conservatives, Republicans and regular old Americans tune in to watch its hosts disintegrate in real time in reaction to every move Trump makes.

All hell has broken loose at the cable network since Trump won back in November, with salaries being slashed, ratings in the tank and Trump-haters like Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski making a humiliating pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago to seek favor with the president-elect. RedState’s Becky Noble had the rundown:

The viewership nosedive is just part of the internal strife at MSNBC. Because of ratings, Comcast announced recently that they would be spinning off several of NBCUniversal’s cable outlets, including MSNBC, and that it would not be attached to NBC News. In addition, “Morning Joe” co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski incurred the wrath of many of MSNBC’s faithful viewers when they revealed they had met with Donald Trump, all the while insisting to those viewers that he was a “fascist” and a “threat to democracy.” It was also revealed that MSNBC host Al Sharpton’s nonprofit organization took money from Kamala Harris’s campaign before he interviewed her.

Things are in a shambles, indeed. The only way to revive the failing cable network is to give conservatives a reason to tune in, and that reason comes in the form of Rachel Maddow, who is consistently and proudly wrong about everything. That, along with her angry outbursts, makes top-notch viewing.

Alas, the fun will only last through May 1, when Maddow returns to being grossly overpaid for underperforming as a weekly host and poor Alex Wagner is allowed back into the studio. So, let’s make the most of it while it lasts.

Let the hilarity begin!
