The son of a hardworking couple has been charged with murdering them inside their takeaway shop in Sydney‘s west.
Hoa Tek Chiem, 69, and Heang Kim Gau, 68, were allegedly killed inside Buzzy Bee’s Burger House at Cambridge Park about 9.40am on Saturday.
It’s understood a family member discovered their remains about 10am.
NSW Police arrested the couple’s son Allan Chiem, 31, at their family home in Canley Heights at 12.30am on Sunday.
‘He was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with two counts of murder (DV),’ a spokeswoman said.
‘He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court later today.’
The spokeswoman earlier revealed police will allege the trio were ‘known to each other’.
It is understood police are investigating whether the incident was a targeted robbery gone wrong.
When asked if anything was stolen from the shop or if there were any signs of a break-in, a source said officers were ‘continuing to forensically examine the crime scene’.
Footage of a man dressed head-to-toe in black and climbing onto the roof of the takeaway shop circulated on social media in the hours after the alleged murder.
Detective inspector Michael Cantrell confirmed on Saturday officers were investigating the video.
Police described the scene of the alleged murders as ‘confronting’ with the injuries inflicted on the couple ‘significant’.
Insp Cantrell confirmed a family member had found the pair, but said it was ‘yet to be established’ if they were present during the alleged attack.
Mr Chiem and Ms Gau were well-known in the area of their shop, which they’d run for several years.
It’s understood they were making plans to retire shortly before their deaths.
Owner of a nearby bakery, Thanh Tran, recalled seeing the couple’s family while officers cordoned off the shop.
‘About 9.30am the eldest son visited the store and then the youngest came and the two hugged and cried for an hour,’ Mr Tran said.
‘Police got them milk crates to sit on and they hugged and sat down and cried, and they looked so sad, it was so sad.
‘And the police stood around and watched them (as they talked and cried).’
Chiem was refused bail and is set to appear at Parramatta Local Court later Sunday.
