An American man who met his wife on a Filipino dating app revealed the awkward questions asked by family members after he paid $20,000 to start a life in the US together.
Evan and Stephanie were both on a Filipino dating app, and after she changed her location to America, the pair matched.
‘So after downloading all of the American dating apps I decided to download a Filipino dating app just to see what’s out there,’ he explained on Truly’s Love Don’t Judge.
Evan soon matched with Stephanie and, after just three-and-half weeks of talking, he knew she was the one for him.
‘[After] getting to know the most beautiful and funny girl I decided to book my flight to go see her,’ he explained. ‘I’d say I spent about $5,000 each trip so about $15,000 for the three trips I took.’
Stephanie added: ‘The moment he landed in the Philippines he asked me to be [his] girlfriend and we became official.’
Stephanie said people often assume she is a maid, as she does all the ‘cooking, cleaning and washing but it’s just normal household chores.’
‘When people say Stephanie is my maid I don’t take it personally because I know that we are both happy and we have a good thing going between the two of us,’ Evan added.
Whilst they’re in love, many people can’t help but judge their relationship.
‘People judge my relationship because I’m from the Philippines and my husband spent $20,000 to bring me here in the United States,’ Stephanie admitted.
Evan’s mom had her reservations when he first went to the Philippines to see Stephanie.
‘I did have concerns especially the first visit. You were going very far away and you’re the foreigner and you look like a foreigner and you’re going to a country to meet a woman that you don’t know that well,’ Evan’s mom, Susan, said.
She did question why the couple got married so quickly, as they had a secret elopement in June, and admitted she wondered how compatible they really were.
However, after seeing them together she changed her mind, telling Stephanie there was one particular moment she knew they were truly in love.
‘I have to tell you that I haven’t told you,’ Susan told Stephanie. ‘Before when you got off the plane and you were waiting for him and you saw him you were just so excited.’
She continued: ‘I was in tears and it was just so genuine and and that really kind of locked it in knowing how much you cared.’
The couple face critical comments, such as ‘why you could not find someone in US.’
‘She going to milk your money dry boy yeah did you pay for this one?’ added another.
‘Bro imported a slave he found a housekeeper,’ another had written.
Evan also said he’s often told he’s dating someone out of his league, but they make fun of some of the comments they receive about their relationship.
‘We play into it a little bit and get interaction that way,’ Evan shared.
The happy husband gushed that his wife has made him a ‘much better person,’ in a lot of ways.
‘She’s gotten me out of my shell usually I’m introverted and she’s the extrovert,’ he said fondly.
‘She’s a helped me be more social and enjoy life,’ he said.
Stephanie agreed, affectionally crediting her husband for changing her life.
‘Aside from him bringing me here, that really changed my whole life, I feel more confident with myself,’ she happily said.
