New mom accused of being selfish after revealing ‘unconventional’ baby name to family

A new mom has been left reeling after opting for a very unconventional name for her first child.

Posting to the AITAH subreddit, the 29-year-old revealed that she and her husband had decided on the name Nyxiryn for their ‘beautiful baby girl’.

‘It’s a combination of “Nyx,” the Greek goddess of the night, and “Irina,” which means “peace” in Greek. We thought it sounded poetic, strong, and unique,’ she explained.

‘We’re both into mythology and literature, and we wanted a name that felt unique but also meaningful,’ she added.

Upon sharing the name with her friends and family, the woman received a ‘mixed’ reaction that stunned her.

A new mom has been blasted as 'selfish' after naming her first child Nyxiryn

‘Some of them thought it was cool and different, but others were clearly taken aback. My mom said it was “a mouthful,” and my sister-in-law was silent for a while before saying, “Well, it’s… interesting”,’ she said.

Things got worse from there when the woman’s aunt ‘burst into laughter’ at a family dinner.

‘You seriously named your kid that? Poor child. You’ve practically cursed her with that name,’ the aunt remarked.

The relative went on to call Nyxiryn a ‘made-up, weird name’ and claimed that it would lead to the little girl being ‘bullied in school’.

‘She even went so far as to call me selfish for giving her a name like that and said I was setting her up for a life of frustration,’ the mom wrote.

‘I’m starting to second-guess myself,’ she admitted.

‘My mom said my aunt was out of line, but also added that “people do have a point” and suggested that we might want to consider a more “normal” name.’

Readers in the comments section of the post seemed to agree that the name was too bizarre and should be changed for the child’s sake.

‘I have an unconventional name and life has been hard. Less opportunities in pretty much everything and everyone judges you by your name. It’s a f***ing curse,’ wrote one.

‘You need to think about whether you’re choosing a name based on your daughter’s needs or based on your own desire to sound clever,’ added another.
