Fast on the heels of the news that a person of interest in the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson last Wednesday in New York City had been picked up in Altoona, Pennsylvania, New York officials held a press conference on the matter. Mayor Eric Adams addressed members of the press, followed by New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and then Chief of Detectives John Kenny.

Here’s what we learned from the presser (included in Mayor Adams’ tweet below, though his verbiage appears to be unrelated).

Adams began the press conference by referring to the person apprehended as a “strong person of interest,” who matches the description of the person police had been seeking in relation to Thompson’s murder. Per Adams, the man was in possession of several items linking him to the shooting. Adams credited “good old fashioned police work” with identifying and locating the man.

New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch then spoke and shared several key points:

  • The suspect was located and apprehended in Altoona, Pennsylvania
  • He is identified as 26-year-old Luigi Nicholas Mangione
  • He is being held on firearms charges
  • He was located at a McDonald’s, where he was recognized by a restaurant employee who called local police
  • He was acting suspiciously and had multiple fraudulent IDs on his person as well as a passport
  • Police recovered a firearm and a suppressor on his person, both consistent with the weapon used in the murder
  • His clothing and mask matched those seen in the photos that had been released
  • He had a fraudulent New Jersey ID on him which was the same as that used to check into the hostel in New York City prior to the shooting incident
  • He also had a handwritten document speaking to his motivation and mindset

Chief of Detectives John Kenny also spoke to reporters and shared some additional details, including that Mangione was born and raised in Maryland, has some ties to San Francisco, and a last known address in Hawaii. The gun in question is described as a “ghost gun.” At this time, they believe he was acting alone.

Additional background on Mangione, reported by Fox News, includes that he was the Valedictorian of his Maryland high school class. He has a tech background and was admitted to U Penn (though it is unclear whether he attended or graduated from the school). Moreover, his cousin, Antonino “Nino” Mangione, is a Maryland state delegate.

This is a developing story. RedState will provide additional information as it becomes available.
