NFL quarterback lands shock chance to reclaim starting spot weeks after being benched for dreadful start

Bryce Young will be back in the NFL for the Carolina Panthers this weekend, replacing Andy Dalton after he was involved in a car accident.

Dalton, his wife and his three children, were involved in accident this week and the quarterback has sprained his thumb, meaning he is out of Sunday’s game against Denver Broncos

Young, the first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was benched by the Panthers after a Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

And while Dalton led the Panthers to a Week 3 win over Las Vegas Raiders, it hasn’t got much better for them since. They are 1-6 and got heavily beaten by the Washington Commanders last Sunday, losing 40-7.

‘Scary moment, for sure,’ Panthers head coach Dave Canales said of Dalton’s accident.

‘Everyone was ok, everyone was healthy. Unfortunately in the accident, he did sprain his thumb so Bryce will be playing this weekend for us.

‘We will be evaluating Andy day-to-day going into this weekend to see if we can get him up as the two on gameday.’

Dalton was quick to throw his support behind Young for the game and insisted that they have grown closer together, despite the benching.

‘He’s been great, I’ve said it every week,’ Dalton said. ‘He has handled this situation for it, I’m thankful for it and I’m thankful for our friendship and what we have been able to build.

‘Hopefully by the end of the week I’ll be back but we’ll see, we’ve got to get through the process.’

Young has completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 299 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions in four games (two starts) this season.
