While he preemptively took himself out of consideration as Attorney General in President-elect Donald Trump’s second administration, Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt is a staunch supporter of Trump and enthusiastic about the incoming administration.

Schmitt joined “Sunday Morning Futures” and spoke with host Maria Bartiromo about what he views as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” presenting itself in the wake of Trump’s resounding win and triumphant return to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

Here’s some of what Schmitt told Bartiromo Sunday morning:
“I think if you take a step back and look at what happened in this election, President Trump delivered the greatest political comeback in American history. The Democrats tried to keep him off the ballot, they tried to bankrupt him, they tried to throw him in jail for the rest of his life. He survived — including assassination attempts — he survived all of that and emerged, winning all the battleground states, including the popular vote.
“How did he do it? He created a multi-ethnic, working-class coalition — really the disruptors versus the establishment. And I think that’s important to note as we roll into these confirmation hearings. He is willing to take on permanent Washington in a way that no president has, certainly in my lifetime.
“We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to deliver that change — to take on permanent Washington, return the power back to the people. But you can’t just do it with the Article I branch — you have to have people you trust to go into these agencies and have a real reform agenda. And that’s why I think there’s real momentum — real momentum — to get these nominations confirmed, to actually deliver what President Trump promised on the campaign [trail].”

As Trump has rolled out his growing list of nominees to fill Cabinet positions and other key staff roles, there’s been no shortage of bellyaching from the usual suspects about their qualifications and agendas — even though many of the names on the list and their prospective roles were plain as day during the campaign. Yes, a couple of the names have been surprises and may face a tough time in the confirmation process. But all of his picks thus far — and the clip at which he’s announcing them — signal that Trump is acutely aware that the clock is ticking and the resistance to effecting the changes he aims to will be mighty, and he’s hyperfocused on not being waylaid this time around.
