Paul Merson has offered a frank assessment of Arsenal‘s chances of securing silverware this season.

After taking Manchester City to the final day last year, the Gunners entered the current campaign among the favourites to lift the Premier League title.

However, despite a strong start, the Gunners have found themselves consistently trying to keep pace with league leaders Liverpool.

Arne Slot‘s side have suffered just a single Premier League defeat all season, and remain in contention in all four competitions, having booked their place in the EFL Cup final with a 4-0 thrashing of Spurs on Thursday.

Meanwhile Arsenal were knocked out of the competition after being beaten 2-0 by Newcastle at the semi-final stage.

Speaking following the result Merson questioned whether Mikel Arteta‘s side will be able to add to their trophy cabinet this season.

The Gunners were knocked out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday following defeat to Newcastle

But the Gunners legend insisted he hopes fans do not call for Mikel Arteta to be sacked

‘They’ve got two [trophies left to win], one they could be out of by Wednesday night in my opinion,’ Merson said on Sky Sports.

‘If Liverpool win at Everton, that’ll be nine points clear with 15 odd games left. They’d have to lose four of them which I think would be impossible. To me, it comes down to Wednesday.

‘I did half-fancy them in the Champions League but I’ve just seen them get destroyed by Newcastle over two legs and – no disrespect – there’s a lot better teams than Newcastle in the Champions League knockout phase, so for me they’re right up against it.

‘It all depends how many points they get beaten by in the end if they don’t win the league. If they come second again he’s going to stay, I hope people don’t think, “Oh, let’s change the manager”.

‘But he had to be there, ready to pounce when Man City dropped off and he didn’t and Liverpool have.’

Arsenal return to action on Saturday when they travel to the King Power Stadium to take on Leicester.

After finishing third in the revamped Champions League league format, the Gunners will face an unseeded side in the round of 16 next month.
