It’s that time of year again when we turn our eyes to Pennsylvania and the actions of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog. On Feb. 2, if Phil sees his shadow, tradition says that’s six more weeks of winter-like weather. If he doesn’t, that bodes well for better weather.

It’s a long-standing tradition, although it has had its problematic moments, such as when Democratic Mayor Bill DeBlasio tried to copy the process with “Staten Island Chuck” but dropped the animal, who later died.
But the scolds at PETA want to end the Punxsutawney Phil tradition. Oh, but don’t worry, they have an alternative. What a headline: “PETA petitions to replace Punxsutawney Phil with ‘weather reveal’ vegan cake on Groundhog Day”
PETA activists are calling for Punxsutawney Phil, the region’s fluffiest weather predictor, to be replaced with a vegan “weather reveal cake” during Sunday’s annual Groundhog Day celebration in Pennsylvania.
The animal rights organization sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club offering to provide the vegan treat, which would mimic that of a gender reveal for a baby, for the annual Feb. 2 ceremony in Gobbler’s Knob if they agree to retire the beloved rodent and his family to a “reputable sanctuary.”

If the filling of the cake shows blue, it’s more winter. If it’s pink, it’s an early spring.
It sounds like something that comedians or the Babylon Bee would come up with — how is this real life?
But it’s PETA, so it figures that it borders on parody, and can I say how unappealing that cake sounds? They’ve offered alternatives before. I’m not exactly sure why they’re freaking out over the tradition since apart from DeBlasio’s groundhog incident, the groundhog is not treated badly. No one is eating him, indeed, he’s treated pretty well. Not surprisingly, the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club has blown them off and I think it’s fair to say they’re not exactly looking to PETA to control their actions.
Sometimes I think PETA was created by people who just want to pull out legs and entertain us with silly things because no one can be serious about the things they come up with to attack.

That’s the guy that Kamala Harris and the left didn’t choose as running mate in favor of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Now he’s still a Democrat with horrible policies because of it and PETA is a pretty easy target, but that’s a comment that neither Harris nor Walz would get or understand.
Yes, Democrats, please run Kamala Harris again in 2028 and show that you haven’t learned a thing.
