On Monday, there was a lighthearted exchange in the Oval Office between Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy and President Donald Trump. Trump had just signed a slew of Executive Orders after the inaugural address. It was an iconic moment that could only happen with a President Donald J. Trump, and my colleague and editor Becca Lower encapsulated it well.

Trump: “He may have. Wait, don’t they leave it in the desk? I don’t know. Oh.”
Doocy: “What’s in there?”

At that particular time, Trump chose not to read the letter out loud, but promised Doocy that he would read him in when the time came. On Wednesday morning, Trump responded to press questions, and one was concerning the Biden farewell letter. Trump said he had read it and alluded to the contents, saying it was a nice, “inspirational-type letter” and felt it was a positive in Biden’s favor that he wrote it.

In terms of the entirety of the farewell letter, Trump was true to his word to Peter Doocy. Doocy posted on X, revealing the contents Trump released exclusively to him.

Along with Trump’s once-in-a-lifetime comeback journey to the White House, this tradition of the farewell letter was also a never-to-be replicated (at least in our lifetime) moment in time. Former President Biden is the first president to write this letter to a successor who also wrote a farewell letter to him. Crazy, cool, and a little bit strange, but such is our American history.

Given Biden’s state of being and mind upon leaving the office, who knows who actually wrote this letter. However, one can appreciate that he took the high road. From claiming Trump was an “existential threat to democracy” to well wishes and prayers for guidance is a big leap. If Joe Biden had any shred of dignity left, he at least showed it in this final act.
