Phil Murphy Splutters After Tom Homan Goes FAFO on Story of Garage-Dwelling Illegal Immigrant

On Monday, we wrote about the stunning claim made by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy (D) during a recent interview in which he strongly implied he and his wife, NJ First Lady Tammy Murphy, were harboring a female illegal immigrant above their garage.

“Tammy and I were talking about – I don’t want to get into too much detail, but there is someone in our broader universe whose immigration status is not yet at the point that they are trying to get it to,” Murphy stated. “And we said, you know what? Let’s have her live at our house above our garage.”

Even more shockingly, Murphy appeared to taunt ICE to try and take the alleged illegal immigrant he was allegedly harboring from them.

“And good luck to the feds coming in to try to get her,” he dared.

As RedState’s Rusty Weiss reported, border czar Tom Homan responded accordingly to Murphy’s statement, confirming on Fox News that “I got note of it. Won’t let it go. We’ll look into it.”

“And if he’s knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien, that’s a violation of Title VIII of the United States Code 1324,” Homan also observed, while adding that prosecution would then be sought.

Perhaps with the thought in mind that their boss might have just admitted to a federal crime, Murphy’s office hit the panic button, and suggested the governor, who is serving his last year in office due to term limits, had been wildly taken out of context:

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s office furiously tried to backpedal Monday after he boasted that he had opened his home to a migrant and taunted the Trump administration “to try to get her.’’

A rep told The Post that the loose-lipped Jersey leader had been “misinterpreted” and that no such situation had occurred — even though Murphy had dared the feds to come after the migrant.

Murphy was just referring to a legal resident who is in his circle of friends and was worried about President Trump’s return to the White House, the governor’s rep said.

“No one’s ever lived in the home” under those circumstances that the governor described, the representative insisted.

That… makes no sense. I mean, he really left no room for any other interpretation beyond the ones that were gleaned from his comments.  Why admit to something like that, which would have real consequences not just for the person he was allegedly harboring but for him and potentially his wife, too?

As I noted yesterday, from a political perspective he seemingly had nothing to lose considering he’s term-limited out and hasn’t expressed any desire publicly, as far as I know, for a future Congressional or presidential run. But as commenters correctly observed, he did have his freedom (and a lot of money) to lose with the admission considering this would be a felony if he had, in fact, been hiding someone above his garage who he knew was not in the country legally.

Further, the optics of this were just terrible for him considering it was a lone female who he said was staying above his garage. That left people wondering if the woman could be a maid, cook, and/or… something else.

In any event, my gut feeling after seeing the clip was that he was telling a fictional tale and virtue signaling to the interviewer and crowd in an effort to demonstrate his supposed love, compassion, and understanding for those who Democrats describe as “undocumented” individuals.

That said, as I understand it, Murphy making a false claim of this nature is also a crime punishable by jail/prison time and/or fines.

Whether any of that bears out remains to be seen. Hopefully, in the coming weeks, Tom Homan can get to the bottom of the story to separate fact from fiction and give New Jersey residents the answers (which maybe would include a perp walk?) they deserve regarding claims from their soon-to-be-departing governor.
