A popular Mexican restaurant has shut its doors after 11 years – as foodies notice a worrying trend sweeping across the Australian hospitality scene.
Mejico, located on Pitt St in Sydney’s CBD, has ceased operations as the owners of the building renovate the site.
‘After 11 incredible years, our beloved home is being redeveloped,’ a post on the restaurant’s website read.
‘This means we will be packing up our tequila and saying farewell to Pitt Street… for now.’
Operators revealed they hope to move to another location soon and urged diners to ‘stay tuned’ about their move.
The restaurant’s final day of trade was on Sunday, October 27.
Mejico served 929,300 customers during its tenure with hundreds sharing their devastation over the temporary closure.
‘One of my favourite Sydney restaurants,’ a fan raved. ‘I hope you open again soon, thank you for all the fantastic lunches and dinners.’
‘This is so sad, I’ve had many great date nights there,’ another said.
‘My best memories were always taco Tuesdays with a big group of friends at Mejico,’ a woman wrote.
‘Watching the guac made at the table is a highlight – and eating it too.’
Mejico is another link in a long chain of fan-favourite restaurants to close its doors.
Diners in Sydney‘s Neutral Bay were shocked when they found Yok Thai completely ‘cleared out’ in early June – even after the spot was frequented by politician Gladys Berejiklian.
Other popular eateries going bust or shutting up shop include Big Poppa’s in Darlinghurst, Bistrot 916 in Potts Point, and Tetsuya’s in Darling Harbour.
Cirrus Dining, The Bentley Restaurant Group’s seafood-focused restaurant at Barangaroo, ceased trading after eight years of service.
The two-hatted restaurant had its final service on September 1, coinciding with the end of its lease.
‘This is a bittersweet decision for us,’ Cirrus co-owners Brent Savage and Nick Hildebrandt said in a statement.
‘Whilst we wanted to extend our lease, we were unable to strike a deal with our new landlord. Although this is disappointing, it has opened the door for new opportunities which will be announced soon.’
