The work of safeguarding election integrity continues through the weekend following Election Day, including in the state of Arizona, which is still processing ballots at this hour.

As I previously wrote, on Saturday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a new lawsuit with the Arizona Supreme Court, aiming to extend the ballot cure process the current deadline of Sunday at 5 p.m. MST.

The Republican-majority state Senate responded immediately, with Senate President Warren Petersen releasing a statement on X, standing against the ACLU and allied leftist organizations to slow-walk the election results in the Copper State:

On Saturday, Sasha Hupka, the elections reporter for the Arizona Republic wrote on X that the GOP Arizona state Senate president, Warren Petersen “says he will intervene in a lawsuit filed by the ACLU and the Campaign Legal Center this morning.” The suit “asks the Arizona Supreme Court to consider extending the five-day ballot cure deadline,” she added.

Here’s Petersen’s statement, in which he stands against the left’s attempt to drag things out in the Copper state–and provides hope for meaningful change in how AZ conducts elections via legislation in the next session.

It reads:

The left is suing to extend the time to determine the election.  I just authorized the AZ Senate to intervene and defend existing law so we can determine the outcome as soon as possible.  It has already taken too much time!  And next session will re-introduce bills to get election results, night of.

Now, the Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Republican Party of Arizona have filed in the state’s high court to stop the move. Harmeet Dhillon, who’s leading the election integrity legal team in Arizona during the 2024 election, shared the announcement on her X account:

It reads:

Just filed our papers in the Arizona Supreme Court opposing the ACLU’s effort to extend ballot curing past the statutory 5 pm deadline today. Now we wait for the high court to rule …

The Chairman of the GOP, Michael Whatley said in a statement posted to X after news of the filing:

The RNC has worked aggressively with the @AZGOP and our Republican candidates throughout the process of curing and counting all outstanding ballots across Arizona. We will continue our engagement until every ballot is counted. Thanks to @pnjaban for leading our legal team in this crucial state.

He closed with “Protect the Vote!” Let’s pray the effort by Republicans here on that count is successful.

As this is a developing story, RedState will provide updates as they become available.
