Single woman reignites fierce debate about dating etiquette ahead of Valentine’s Day

  • One Reddit user shared her recent experience with a man she has been dating
  • Despite booking a trip without consulting her, he still asked her to pay
  • Commenters in the thread thought he was at fault and told her to dump him

With the day of love just around the corner, there are bound to be some upsetting mishaps in the world of dating.

Forgetful partners, breakups, and underwhelming gifts are only a few of the possibilities.

And one Reddit user posted to the popular Am I The A**hole thread to share her recent experience ahead of February 14.

She explained that a little over a month ago, a man she has been dating booked a vacation for Valentine’s Day weekend.

‘He said it was a present,’ the exasperated woman explained in the post.

‘I told him over and over he didn’t have to do that. I was fine with dinner.’

He didn’t listen and decided to keep the trip booked.

However, as the holiday drew closer, he shocked her with a request that she contribute towards the cost.

‘Flash forward to today, six days before Valentine’s,’ the frustrated writer explained.

‘He says to me “that he needs half the money for the trip or he will cancel” because he is feeling strapped for cash and spent too much money. Some being at dinner last week.’

She added: ‘I thought about it and I told him just to cancel.

‘I feel like it’s rude to just change plans last minute and demand money from me when I was under the false pretense it was a gift.’

The disgruntled writer was met with hundreds of comments on her post.

Many of the comments sided with the user, arguing that the man’s behavior was unacceptable.

‘It’s not a gift if you have to pay for it,’ a commenter wrote.

‘It’s not a gift if he demands payment. If he needed to split the cost, he should never have excluded you from planning it,’ another said in part. ‘Instead, he surprised you with a bill, essentially.’

‘It’s one thing if y’all agreed beforehand to split the cost,’ another shared. ‘But who plans a gift they can’t afford AND expects you to cover “your” half of your own gift? And a week out from the date in question???

‘He’s not only rude but very dim-sighted for not budgeting for this getaway before.’

Others advised the user to break up with the man due to his behavior.

‘Cancel the relationship too!’ someone wrote.

‘He just showed you he is not worth dating. Find someone else to date,’ another person said.

‘Dump him,’ a third simply advised.
