Australia will be blasted by a heatwave this week with temperatures in almost all states and territories to soar to 40C or more.
The mercury will reach 46C in the outback town of Birdsville on the border between Queensland and the Northern Territory on Wednesday.
Windorah in Queensland’s central west and Thargomindah in the southwest are both set to reach tops of 45C on Wednesday.
The Bureau of Meteorology has also issued a severe heatwave warning for the state’s Central West and the Northern Goldfields regions until Friday.
Brisbane won’t be spared from the sweltering temperatures with the city to reach tops of 36C on Wednesday.
The mercury will dip slightly to 33C on Thursday before it returns to 36C on Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Angus Hines said the temperatures across Queensland’s southeast are slightly warmer than usual.
‘Really hot few days ahead… really warm nights as well, mid 20s through the night. You’ve got to look after yourself – stay out of the sun, stay hydrated … don’t forget about your animals, your pets, your livestock,’ Mr Hines told NCA Newswire.
The scorching temperatures will also affect several parts of NSW with Nyngan located in the central region of the state to hit tops of 43C.
Cobar, Narromine and Coonamble will also reach temperatures of 41C.
Sydney’s CBD will reach tops of 35C on Wednesday with the chance of a thunderstorm in the afternoon, while western Sydney is predicted to hit 39C.
The Harbour City will receive a cool change on Thursday and Friday with tops of 25C expected with mostly cloudy conditions expected for the weekend.
The remote town of Warburton in central WA will swelter in 44C heat with tops of 45C expected for the remainder of the week.
Perth will be partly cloudy on Wednesday with tops of 37C before the mercury heats up again on Thursday to reach tops of 39C. The city sweltered through a muggy 43C day on Monday with tops of 29C forecast for the weekend.
Meanwhile, tennis fans will be treated to an ideal spell of weather in Melbourne on Saturday and Sunday with tops of 25C and 29C forecast for the Australian Oepn finals. A top of 21C is expected across the city on Wednesday with a chance of showers.
