The cost of attending a wedding has slowly crept up over the years, so it made sense that one woman was left fuming after finding out her friend’s wedding wasn’t even real – after forking out money for it.

The friend of the bride-to-be posted to Reddit‘s Wedding Shaming thread, explaining she had been asked to be a bridesmaid for the upcoming nuptials – but as it turned out, her pal was never planning on legally getting married.

‘She wanted to do it for social media and for gifts,’ she wrote incredulously.

The woman said that she ‘had my dress and everything,’ until her friend revealed the sham wedding eight months before the happy couple were meant to tie the knot.

‘I was shocked and appalled,’ she wrote in the post. ‘Her reasons for not wanting to actually legally marry him were crazy.’

The woman ultimately decided not to attend the wedding, admitting she found the idea of standing up in front of all of their guests knowing it wasn’t legally binding as difficult.

‘[I] immediately resold my bridesmaid dress and never talked to her again,’ she shared.

To make matters worse, the friend’s husband-to-be thought the wedding would be legally binding, but the bride had told her she wasn’t planning on sending the paperwork in.

‘She also wanted us to spend $3K each on her bachelorette party for a wedding that wasn’t even happening so she could post about her bach party on social media,’ the irate bridesmaid added.

‘[She also] wanted all her bridesmaids to pay $750 each for her bridal shower.’

In the end, the woman had to accept the loss of the cost of her flights, as she decided not to go to either event after the bride told her about the fake wedding.

‘It’s crazy the extent people will go to…I often wonder if she went through with this sham of a “wedding,”‘ she wrote, having had no further updates.

In a comment, the woman added why she thinks her ex-friend had not wanted to legally get married.

‘A couple [of reasons] were: “His credit score isn’t high enough. His job isn’t good enough. It’s an easy way out for me when I decide to end it with him. He doesn’t have money for a house. He travels so much,”’ she listed. ‘And these two fought nonstop and had a toxic relationship in my opinion.’

Reddit users were quick to share their thoughts on the questionable wedding.

‘To the folks thinking it’s not so bad – remember that she’s scamming her boyfriend/husband, too. This is not victimless,’ they stated.

Other people thought it wasn’t so bad, pointing out many people throw expensive and extravagant weddings knowing they don’t want to be with that person.

‘On the flip side, I think there is a universe where your friend made the right choice for her. So many people just want a wedding and end up marrying the wrong person as a result,’ they shared.

They continued: ‘Maybe she knew herself and knew she just wanted a wedding even though committing to that person for the rest of her life was a mistake. Not saying having a wedding just for the pictures and gifts is the right thing to do, and if someone feels that way they should probably try to work through those feelings.’

‘I agree. I don’t have an issue with it as long as the “bride and groom” are honest and upfront with the guests. Call it a “commitment ceremony” or something similar,’ wrote another.

‘I would have put her on blast EVERYWHERE, so absolutely EVERYONE she knows would know how stupid she is,’ slammed another.

‘A sham wedding for a couple of toasters and a can opener?’ joked another.

Fake weddings may not be as uncommon as you might think. In 2021, a German-based woman went viral after revealing on TikTok that she pretended to get married in an attempt to get her ex to text her – but it didn’t work.

The woman, named Jacqueline, admitted that she faked her own wedding – complete with a professional photoshoot and stand-in groom – in an attempt to get her ex-boyfriend’s attention, only for him to see it and ignore her in the end.

‘Remembering the time I faked my own wedding and had a professional photoshoot so he would reach out,’ she wrote in the video, which quickly went viral – gaining more than 1.7 million views since it was posted.
