WHAT’S ON TAP?
Today on Capitol Hill…
BIG day on the Hill Wednesday as one of the most highly anticipated confirmation hearings for President Donald Trump’s nominees is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. Eastern: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, will sit for questioning by the Senate Finance Committee. There are 27 members of the committee, and the Democrats on it include Mark Warner (VA), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), Elizabeth Warren (MA), and Bernie Sanders (VT), which should prove interesting — although Sanders has signaled he agrees with some of RFK Jr.’s stances.
Former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler, up for SBA Administrator, also has her hearing today before the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee, though one suspects that hearing will be less fiery.

There are also meetings to consider Pam Bondi’s nomination for Attorney General and Howard Lutnick’s for Secretary of Commerce.
Additionally, the Senate Committee on Aging has an afternoon hearing “to examine making Washington work for seniors, focusing on fighting to end inflation and achieve fiscal sanity.”
White House What’s Up
Trump is expected to sign the Laken Riley Act into law Wednesday, marking the first piece of legislation enacted in his administration. Aside from that, there isn’t much information available as to what his Wednesday will entail. There is no press briefing scheduled, but the general consensus is that Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt knocked it out of the park on Tuesday. What a difference an administration makes.
Full Court Press…
The big news on Tuesday, of course, was the stay placed on Trump’s temporary funding freeze by a federal judge in D.C. One thing to note about that is that the judge’s order was actually quite narrow — she placed a five-day administrative stay on the freeze only with respect to the disbursement of federal funds under open (current) awards to afford the parties to brief and argue the matter, with a hearing set on February 3. The stay does not affect the OMB memo as it pertains to “issuance of new awards” or “other relevant agency actions that may be implicated by the executive orders.”
With every executive action issued, the lawsuits come flying in — we’ll do our best to keep up with them all, but it’s a tall order.

COMING ATTRACTIONS
While Wednesday is sure to be action-packed on the Hill, Thursday will be right there with it. There are confirmation hearings set:
- Kash Patel – FBI Director – Judiciary Committee – 9:30 a.m. Eastern
- Dan Driscoll – Secretary of the Army – Armed Services Committee – 9:30 a.m. Eastern
- Robert F. Kennedy Jr. – Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee – 10:00 a.m. Eastern
- Tulsi Gabbard – Director of National Intelligence – Intelligence Committee – 10:00 a.m. Eastern
There will also be meetings to consider the nominations of Russ Vought as OMB Director and Elise Stefanik as UN Ambassador.
MORNING MUSING
I’m not going to lie: I’m looking forward to today’s (and tomorrow’s) hearings with RFK Jr. I’d place myself solidly in the MAHA camp. I don’t agree with him on a lot — abortion being a big one — but I do agree with him on the critical need to overhaul our health system and the way we deal with food and pharmaceuticals in this country. Yes, he’s a disruptor — we need that. And the fact that those deep pockets are throwing everything and the kitchen sink at him (including his own weaponized family members) makes me all the more determined that he needs to be confirmed. His joining forces with the Trump campaign was significant, and I don’t want to see this nomination derailed. I also think his family members who are speaking out against him now are rotten. Where were they all the years he’s been in public life, waging his environmental and children’s health crusades?

Whew. Good thing you let us know how noteworthy and significant it is. Given that, it’s rather surprising to me that Caroline chose now, after all of his years in public life, to share this searing indictment. We are indebted. Truly. https://t.co/TKCy7rahsJ
