I reported earlier on the interesting conversation between Barack Obama and Donald Trump during the state funeral for Jimmy Carter. They both seemed to keep engaging each other throughout and it seemed pretty cordial, particularly given all the demonizing that the Democrats have done of Trump. Trump said something at one point that made Obama laugh heartily.

Then at another point, it was gold when Kamala Harris looked back at the two conversing and was just so mad when she turned back around. The look on her face was something else. The jealousy and anger were just dripping out of her. She was being ignored, and Jill was giving her such a cold should that even CNN’s Jake Tapper remarked on it.

The big question was: what were the two men talking about so animatedly? I was half-joking when I said maybe Trump said something about Joe Biden and they were sharing a laugh about that. But now it sounds even more interesting than that. A lip reader named Jeremy Freeman told the NY Post what he believes they said. Trump wanted to talk in a quiet place away from others about a matter of importance. Intriguing.

At one point, Trump leaned toward Obama and said, “I’ve pulled out of that. It’s the conditions. Can you imagine that?”
Obama laughed as Trump added, “and after, I will,” before the pooled TV camera feed cut away from the men, who were bracketed by former first lady Laura Bush and Trump’s wife Melania.
“Call me at the foy after, yep,” Trump replied to Obama during their exchange, possibly referring to the National Cathedral’s foyer.
Obama then said, “can you just … it should be good.”
“I can’t talk, we have to find a quiet place sometime. This is a matter of importance and we need to do this outside so that we can deal with it, certainly, today,” Trump said, as Obama nodded.
Now, it sounds like they were talking about international agreements. Trump pulled out of the Iran deal and the Paris Accords, and he wants to pull out of things like the World Health Organization (WHO). Obama appears to get whatever the issue is saying, “it should be good.” But Trump apparently thinks it’s a pressing matter, which makes me even more curious about what it might be. Does he think Obama knows something, or is he going to drop some words on him about if Democrats continue to go after him? I can imagine he might have some things he might say on that score to back them off. Now I really want to know more.

Freeman also dished on church conversations like this when he helped to translate the chat Obama and Joe Biden had at the memorial service for Ethel Kennedy during the campaign.

Biden was clearly worried about Kamala Harris’ chances, and that seemed to be what the conversation was about. Turns out he was right to be concerned.
